Downstreet Housing & Community Development and Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity (CVHFH) help income sensitive households to become homeowners as new homes are built by CVHFH and the selected homeowner. Buyers must apply for Downstreet’s Shared Equity Program and be selected by Central VT Habitat for Humanity's homeowner selection committee.

Are you in need of better housing?
Habitat for Humanity builds homes for those living in subsidized or substandard housing which includes unsafe conditions, expensive rent, and/or being overcrowded.
To Qualify you must:

To Qualify you must:
- Apply through for Downstreet’s Shared Equity program and be within Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity’s income limits. These limits are based on up to 80% Area Median Income (AMI). Refer to the chart below.
- Complete Downstreet’s Homebuyer Education course
- Must either live or work in Washington or Orange Counties
- Be willing to volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity. The requirement is 250 hours per adult with loved ones able to provide up to 50% of the service time.
- Be able to show $500 in a bank account for closing costs
The Home:
Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent, and perpetually affordable housing. We design and build the house to meet the needs of the selected partner homeowner. We will build an energy efficient single unit home with a driveway, shed, backyard, and back deck. The 2/3 bed one and half bath home is located just off of Barre's South Main St, for easy access to Main Street shops, and is within a 9 minute walk of Spaulding Highschool. How our selection process works:
- Complete and submit Downstreet and CVHFH's joint shared equity and homeownership application by 12pm on Sept 18, 2023. Downstreet will share the application with CVHFH.
- Return application to;

Barre, VT 05641 - Downstreet and CVHFH will review and verify all the information in the the application.
- CVHFH will conduct a home visit at the applicant's current residence to verify the need of better housing.
- Applicants will be notified regularly about the status of their application, and will be contacted if additional information is needed.
- The selected Partner Homeowner will be notified that they were selected by the end of December 2023.
