PARTNER HOMEOWNER ADVOCATE

PARTNER HOMEOWNER ADVOCATE
Advocate, adviser, friend
Central VT Habitat for Humanity (CVHFH) is seeking individuals interested in being a Partner Homeowner Advocate. Advocates work directly with our newly selected partner homeowners to help them prepare for home ownership. Advocates use their personal experience as homeowners to help advise the new partner homeowner as to what they need to do prior to moving into their new homes. The advocates act as liaisons between CVHFH and the homeowner to advocate for the interests of the homeowner and to help them through the construction, purchase, and homeownership processes. Habitat for Humanity helps recruit and train advocates, but their primary responsibility is to the homeowner.  For many of our partner homeowners this is the first home they will own and that can be frustrating and complicated,  so our advocates  should be people oriented, kind, patient, and compassionate with our homeowners. For all intents and purposes advocates should be viewed as friends which homeowners can trust and confide in.
CVHFH strives to have two advocates per partner homeowner, so that there is a greater collective experience with homeownership, and so that the time required for working with the Homeowners is distributed between two people.
Requirements:
  • 2 year commitment
  • 1st year Pre Homeownership- work with homeowner to meet requirements and to prepare for homeownership
    • Meet weekly for short check-in meetings
  • 2nd year post Homeownership- Check in with homeowner quarterly to see if they have questions about their new home
Preferred Background of Liaison (Not all are required):
  • Two Liaisons (professional skills and experiences divided between two liaisons)
  • Someone who cares about the HfH mission and wants to help people.
  • Someone who is familiar with homeownership and purchasing a house. Someone who has closed on a house/property multiple times.
  • Good social skills to build an open and honest relationship with the homeowner
  • Preferred professional Skills (not required)
  • Someone with a strong financial background
  • Someone with a background in construction/ contracting/ architecture
  • Real estate agent or attorney
